Cobra LTDx Driver Review
The Cobra LTDx driver launched on February 11th, 2022, with a price tag of $549.99. It is a standout driver for 2022 and ranks very highly in various publications and tests. The LTDx did not launch on its own, however. It came to market with its sister drivers, the LTDx Max and the LTDx LS. Cobra Golf tends to be slightly cheaper than TaylorMade/Callaway/Titleist/Ping. It’s won several best driver accolades. If you are on the lookout for a new driver then could the LTDx be the right one for you?
Cobra LTDx Drivers – What You Should Know
The first question any golfer will ask when they see the LTDx drivers is what LTD stands for! It simply means, “Longest Total Distance” and while this may not be the catchiest of terms, the driver does deliver.
The presence of three drivers in the LTDx range will suit the majority of golfers. The drivers vary in spin, launch angle and forgiveness and are packed full of technology.
Cobra LTDx Driver
The LTDx will suit a wide range of golfers. Combining high forgiveness with medium launch and low spin, Cobra calls it the “ultimate distance machine”. PWR-COR Technology helps achieve zero CG and matched with a high MOI, Cobra have managed to create “a driver unlike any other”. Again, it comes in 460cc and is available in degrees of 9, 10.5 and 12.
Cobra LTDx Max Driver
The most forgiving driver of the group, the LTDx Max has the highest MOI. It offers low to medium spin and has a high launch, making it easier to get into the air. The driver head contains an adjustable heel weight that allows golfers to fine-tune the amount of draw bias they need. The driver is 460cc and comes in degrees of 9, 10.5 and 12.
Cobra LTDx LS Driver
The LTDx LS is Cobra’s low spin driver. It has medium forgiveness and a low launch. It is the most workable of the three drivers and geared towards lower handicaps looking for a more penetrating flight. Unlike the LTDx and LTDx Max, the LTDx LS comes in only two degrees, 9 and 10.5. However, like the other two drivers, the LTDx LS is 460cc.
Who Should Play the Cobra LTDx?
The LTDx is a quality driver suited to a lot of different players. Its offering of length and forgiveness is a winning combination for any golfer and its variety in shaft types and flexes make it very appealing. Due to its high MOI, the clubface will “twist” less on impact and perform better on off-center strikes as a result. This increases accuracy and minimizes the effect of bad shots. The driver’s low spin and H.O.T Face ensure maximum distance.
While forgiving drivers are usually suited for mid to high handicappers, the LTDx is a bit of an all-rounder. Cobra have managed to create a driver that is forgiving enough to benefit high handicappers and long enough to attract low handicappers.
What Makes the Cobra LTDx Great?
The Cobra LTDx’s greatness comes from the aforementioned balance of forgiveness and distance. While forgiving drivers typically get judged by their forgiveness and simplicity to hit, the LTDx can boast an allrounder’s profile as it is also long.
Today’s Golfer carried out a distance test of all the high MOI Drivers on the Market in 2022 and found the Cobra LTDx to be the second longest, coming behind the Callaway Rogue ST Max. That makes it longer than the Ping G425 Max, Titleist TSi2, Mizuno ST-Z 220 and TaylorMade Stealth.
To give even higher praise to the club, Golf Monthly named it their Best Overall Driver for 2022. They specifically highlighted the areas of Aesthetics, Sound, Feel and Value for Money as setting the club apart.
Such reviews and results are possible thanks to Cobra’s PWR-COR technology which has allowed them to push weight low and forward to increase ball speed, a H.O.T (Highly Optimized Topology) Face and a multi-material construction featuring a lightweight carbon crown and sole plate. The weight saved there along with a lighter titanium chassis means up to 30% more carbon can be used. Cobra utilized machine learning to analyze data from thousands of impact simulations in an attempt to maximize ball speed across the face with variable thickness creating multiple zones.
Cleverly positioned weights right behind the hitting zone transfer maximum speed into the golf ball and reduce spin to optimize launch for longer drives.
Cobra LTDx Driver Review
Looks
Looking down, the crown of the LTDx’s club head is very compact and attractive with a matte black finish. This marks a change from the glossy black finish of its predecessor, the Radspeed. The base of the club head also marks a departure from previous versions and while many enjoy its appearance, it feels like a step down from the Speedzone that launched in 2020.
Adjustment
The LTDx is fully adjustable with a total of nine settings to choose from. This allows golfers to alter the loft by plus or minus 1.5 degrees. The back weighting of 15g is fixed however and can’t be adjusted.
Distance
The LTDx is a long driver. It has performed well against drivers from other manufacturers as well as its predecessor, the Radspeed. Golf Monthly carried out a test between the LTDx and Radspeed and found that the LTDx had increased in ball speed and carry distance.
Accuracy and Forgiveness
With its high Moment-Of-Inertia, the LTDx is very forgiving. Since it won’t “twist” as much on off-center strikes, golfers will see fewer wayward shots. In the above test between the LTDx and the Radspeed, Golf Monthly highlighted the forgiving performance of the LTDx on the course.
Cobra LTDx Driver Shaft Options
While the Cobra LTDx doesn’t have offer the same number of stock shaft choices as other drivers, there still should be something to suit everyone. The three available shafts are the PROJECT X HZRDUS Smoke iM10 60, the PROJECT X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Blue 60 and the UST Helium Nanocore 40, 50. These shafts come in a variety of flexes and weights, ranging from 45g to 66g to suit any swing speed or type of shaft loading.
Cobra LTDx Driver Verdict
The Cobra LTDx is a superb driver offering a unique blend of length and forgiveness. Golf Monthly have named it their driver of the year for 2022 and given its performance, it is easy to see why.
Aside from performance, this Cobra driver is well priced at $549.99. This marks a considerable saving compared to other top drivers such as the TaylorMade Stealth which can cost anywhere between $637.99-$912.99 and the Titleist TSR2 priced between $659.99-$879.99.
